It's been 29 years since the first issue of HUSTLER appeared on the newsstands to drive the bluenoses crazy. Well, in point of fact, the first few issues of HUSTLER were kind of tame, and the prudes would have to wait a few months to get their panties in a twist. That's because I was letting other people tell me what to do. But by issue #8, I'd had enough of that. I decided to create the kind of magazine I wanted to see and to say the things I wanted to say-no holds barred-while ignoring the people who said, "Larry, you can't do that." From that moment on I did and said whatever I god damned well wanted in the pages of HUSTLER.
In that regard, not much has changed in 29 years. Despite my being shot and paralyzed, despite all the precedent-setting legal battles we've fought in U. S. courts and, perhaps most notably, despite the changes in America itself-a rightward tilt that would have been impossible to imagine even ten years ago-here at HUSTLER we maintain the same philosophy we had back then. At its core, it's a philosophy that demands we defend the truth, whether it be by displaying a woman's body as it was created or by calling an asshole an asshole, even if he is the President of the United States.
It's a philosophy which will continue to define the pages of HUSTLER for as long as I'm around. You can think what you want of Playboy and Penthouse, but only HUSTLER presents the truth without hypocrisy and fear.
